Migration Cleanup Before SharePoint Online

Mara: Joseph Riviello has been writing about exactly that: what organizations need to resolve before migrating to SharePoint Online and which governance gaps can quietly undermine a Copilot rollout before it begins.

Mara: The central argument is that a SharePoint Online migration is not simply a copy-and-paste operation. It is an organizational-readiness initiative. Ownership, permissions, content quality, and documentation all require attention before content moves.

SharePoint Online migration is not merely a technical copy-and-move effort. When governance problems are not addressed before migration, they usually follow the organization into the new environment.

The final point is especially important. Licensing is not a readiness plan. Organizations still need defined ownership, policy, controls, pilot boundaries, success measures, risk treatment, and documented acceptance criteria.
